It is told by the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi, that the government's decision to slightly increase excise duty was part of a strategy to build car manufacturing capacity in Ghana. He also said at the moment, Ghana does not have a complete automotive manufacturing company. As per him, the automotive companies in Ghana only participate in the integration of vehicles.
Speaking during a press conference in Koforidua, Mr. Okyere Baafi, who is also a Member of Parliament for the New Juaben South Constituency, said the government has strategic plans to develop the Iron and Steel industry so that it can supply car parts manufacturers.
He urged all, especially the sellers of the remaining parts in Abossey Okai to support the government's plan. The Deputy Minister said that making Ghana a productive hub on the African continent would boost an inclusive economy.
Also, Mr. Okyere Baafi said the Department was in talks with cement producers and other stakeholders to come up with legislation that would help the cement industry. The Deputy Minister pointed out that there is no law governing the industry in that the newcomers go through the unfriendly competition.
Commenting on developments in the New Juaben South District, Mr. Michael Okyere Baafi observed that the roads in Koforidua town and community areas will continue to improve as security at the municipality improves. Mr. Baafi stated that the construction of a police station on Kassadja Road, Korle Nkwanta, and Mile 50 would begin this year to strengthen police visibility and reduce the crime rate in the municipality.
