When we think about protecting the car, sometimes it may seem like a good idea to have the car parked or inactive so that it does not wear out for an extended period of time to better preserve it, but the reality is very different.
If the correct maintenance has not been carried out, a car with a long period of inactivity can have very costly failures, because many parts need regular operation to avoid breaking down.
As an example, when a person suffers an injury and cannot move a joint or muscle, it is necessary to rehabilitate not only the affected area, but also the muscles near the fracture for correct movement. With cars, they must be used with certain frequency. so that flats do not form on the wheels, so that the oil circulates through the engine and does not rust, among other things.
For this reason, even if it is a classic car, starting it and activating its different systems guarantees that, when you want to use it regularly, it is in perfect condition. These are some of the most common faults that you may notice if you leave a car idle for a long time.
1- Engine problems. The engine is one of the most affected components when a vehicle remains idle for a long period, as the propulsion components require regular operation to avoid failure.
When the engine is not cranking, oil builds up in the crankcase and internal surfaces, such as the pistons in the cylinders, are left without lubrication, which can cause rust.
2- Cooling system. Continuing with the internal part of the car, the engine has a cooling system, mostly based on water cooling. During periods of inactivity, this system can be seriously damaged.
3- Oil leaks. Components such as seals, gaskets and retainers are essential for proper engine operation, as they need oil to stay lubricated and maintain engine balance.
When the vehicle is parked for a long time, these parts can dry out, crack and shrink, resulting in internal leaks that often manifest as blue smoke coming from the exhaust. In this case, it will be necessary to take the vehicle to the mechanical workshop.
4- The tires. After a period of inactivity in which the vehicle remains resting on the ground, the tires tend to deform due to the loss of air pressure. If you plan to leave the car idle for a while, it is advisable to inflate the tires to a higher pressure than the manufacturer recommends.
